The Meadville community is mourning the loss of Stacey Renee Shay, who died peacefully at Marquette Hospice House on August 9, 2026, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 42 years old.
Born on October 27, 1983, in Meadville, Stacey was the daughter of Robert J. Shay Jr. and the late Darla (Gamble) Shay. She was remembered by those who knew her as someone whose life was shaped by strong family bonds, a love of sports and the outdoors, and the many friendships and relationships she developed over the years.
Stacey attended Meadville High School before continuing her education at Edinboro University. She later devoted herself to helping others through her work in in-home healthcare with Sunny Days, a role that reflected her caring nature and commitment to those around her.
During her high school years, Stacey distinguished herself as a talented and determined athlete. She competed in several sports, including basketball, softball, wrestling and soccer, and brought the same competitive spirit and enthusiasm to athletics that she carried throughout her life.
Her love of sports continued well into adulthood. Stacey was a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan, a passion that provided countless opportunities to share her enthusiasm for football with family and friends.
Outside of sports and work, Stacey enjoyed spending time outdoors and surrounded herself with the people and animals she loved. She had a particular affection for Halloween and Christmas, embracing the traditions and excitement that came with both holidays. Shopping was also among her favorite pastimes and provided another source of enjoyment and memorable moments.
Above all, family remained at the center of Stacey’s life.
She is survived by her son, Payton Shay, and his significant other, Heather, of Meadville, as well as her grandchildren, Payton Jr. and Praxton.
She is also survived by her father, Bob Shay, and her brother, Robbie Shay, and his significant other, Stephanie, of Saegertown. Her nieces and nephews, RJ, Keegan, Victoria and Haley, will carry forward the memories they shared with their aunt.
Stacey’s love extended to her animals, who were an important part of her family. She is survived by her dogs, Apollo, Topaz and Ravyn, along with her ferret, Domino. To Stacey, her pets were much more than animals; they were beloved companions and cherished members of her household.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Darla; her stepfather, Jack Lackey; her godfather, Dom Mottillo; and her beloved ferret, Carmella.
Stacey’s final years were marked by a difficult fight against pancreatic cancer. Throughout her illness, she received treatment and support from numerous medical professionals and organizations, whose efforts her family has remembered with gratitude.
Her family expressed special appreciation to the Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute, Fox Chase Cancer Center, and particularly Dr. Igor Astaturov, for the care and support provided throughout her illness.
They also extended their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Marquette Hospice House, where Stacey received compassionate care during her final days.
Hospice provided comfort and support to Stacey and her loved ones during an extraordinarily difficult time, allowing her final moments to be spent peacefully and surrounded by care.
For the Meadville community and everyone who knew Stacey, her death represents the loss of a woman remembered for her determination, generosity, love of family, passion for sports and deep affection for the people and animals who meant the most to her.
Her memory will continue through her son and grandchildren, her extended family, her friends and the many people whose lives she touched throughout her 42 years.
