The Porirua community is mourning the reported passing of Tracy Johnson, a respected community leader whose decades of service across local government, business, sport and community development left a lasting mark on the city.
News of Tracy’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief from people who worked alongside her, knew her through community organisations or simply encountered the warmth, energy and enthusiasm she brought to her work and relationships.
For her family, Tracy was far more than a respected public figure. She was a loving mother of three, nana, aunty, sister and cherished wife to Stephen. Her family remained at the centre of her life, and they are now facing the profound loss of a woman whose presence touched so many people.
Across Porirua, Tracy became known for her ability to bring people together. Her organisational skills, enthusiasm and natural talent for building genuine relationships made her a valued presence in many areas of community life.
She often spoke about her enjoyment of working with people, a passion that guided her toward numerous community-focused roles. Her connection to Porirua went beyond her professional responsibilities. She cared deeply about the city and the people who called it home.
Tracy made significant contributions through her work with Porirua City Council, where she held important roles in Events and Economic Development. Through those positions, she helped support initiatives connected to the city’s growth, community activities and economic development.
Her leadership extended into the local business community when she became Executive Director of the Porirua Chamber of Commerce. In that position, her knowledge of the city and her ability to build relationships helped strengthen connections between businesses, organisations and the wider community.
Sport was another important part of Tracy’s life of service. As President of Kapi Mana Netball, she contributed to a sporting community that has provided opportunities and connection for young people and families throughout the region.
She later served as Chief Executive of the Capital Shakers, adding another significant chapter to a career characterised by leadership, organisation and community engagement.
Tracy’s commitment to public service also continued through her representation of the Pāuatahanui Ward on Porirua City Council. As a councillor, she had another opportunity to advocate for residents and contribute to decisions shaping the future of Porirua.
Across each of these roles, those who knew Tracy remember someone who understood the importance of relationships. Her work was not simply about organisations, events or positions; it was about people and creating opportunities for the community to come together.
Her passing leaves a significant void across Porirua, particularly among the many organisations and individuals who benefited from her energy and commitment over the years.
While her family now grieves the loss of a beloved wife, mother, nana, sister and aunty, the wider Porirua community is also reflecting on the legacy of a woman who dedicated much of her life to serving others.
