The communities of Highmore and Orient, South Dakota, are mourning the loss of Preston Reid Aesoph, a 16-year-old whose laughter, energy and warmth made a lasting impression on his family, friends and classmates.
Preston died Wednesday, August 5, 2026, in Wessington, following a motor vehicle accident. His sudden death has left his family and the wider community grieving a young life that ended far too soon.
Born on August 17, 2009, Preston was deeply connected to his family. He cherished time spent with his parents, siblings and cousins and was remembered as a beloved son, brother, cousin and friend.
Farm life was an important part of Preston’s identity. He enjoyed working cattle, repairing fences, riding four-wheelers and helping with projects. His strong work ethic also showed through the mowing jobs and other work he took on within the community.
Beyond the farm, Preston had a wide range of interests. He loved being around the water, particularly fishing, jet skiing and boating. Hunting, golf, wrestling and football also brought him happiness.
He was a passionate Green Bay Packers fan and supported the New York Yankees. During the summer, he attended three football camps, reflecting his enthusiasm for sports and his willingness to challenge himself and learn.
At Highmore High School, Preston was recognized for his academic efforts and earned a place on the Merit Honor Roll. He was also involved in FBLA and FFA, becoming part of the school community through academics, activities and friendships.
Those who knew Preston remembered his sense of humor, spontaneity, kindness and infectious smile. He had a way of bringing energy into ordinary moments and making the people around him feel connected.
For his family, the memories of Preston’s personality and the life he shared with them will now become an important part of their grieving process. His love of family, farm life, sports and the outdoors helped shape the young man they knew and loved.
His death has also been felt by classmates, teachers, friends and others throughout the surrounding communities. Losing someone at only 16 leaves behind not only grief for the person who is gone but also the realization of all the experiences and milestones Preston will never have the opportunity to reach.
A funeral Mass is scheduled for August 12 at the Hyde County Memorial Auditorium in Highmore. A memorial will also be established in Preston’s honor.
As his family, friends and community gather to remember him, Preston Reid Aesoph will be remembered for the joy he brought into people’s lives, his strong work ethic, his many passions and, most of all, the love he shared with those closest to him.
His life was far too short, but the memories he created will remain with his family, friends and community for years to come.
