The Warner Robins, Georgia, community is responding to a shooting at Warner Robins High School Wednesday afternoon that left one student injured and another 14-year-old student in custody.
According to the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened at approximately 2:15 p.m. Wednesday inside one of the school’s bathrooms. Investigators believe two ninth-grade students became involved in an argument that escalated before one student allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot the other.
The injured student was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities initially reported that two people had been injured, but Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton later clarified that only one student was hurt.
Following the shooting, the 14-year-old student who allegedly fired the weapon fled the school on foot, according to Moulton. Authorities eventually located and apprehended the teenager in a nearby neighborhood.
The sheriff said the incident could have resulted in significantly more serious consequences, but the immediate response resulted in one reported injury.
Authorities have not released details about the injured student’s condition. They also have not publicly explained how the teenager obtained the firearm or who it may have been registered to. Information about potential charges against the 14-year-old had also not been released at the time of the report.
The shooting prompted an immediate law-enforcement response at the high school as investigators worked to secure the area and determine exactly what led to the confrontation.
The incident has also disrupted the school week for students and staff. Warner Robins High School will remain closed for the rest of the week, officials said. Staff members will not report to the school Thursday, while the school’s crisis team is expected to be available on campus Friday and Monday to provide support to students and employees affected by the incident.
For students, parents, teachers and staff, the shooting has created fear and concern within the school community. A violent incident on a high school campus can have an impact far beyond those directly involved, leaving students and families seeking reassurance and answers.
As investigators continue examining the circumstances, authorities are expected to determine how the argument developed, how the firearm entered the situation and what led to the shooting.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information about the student’s condition and any charges is expected as authorities release further details.
