The Baytown community is mourning the tragic death of Dr. Michelle Yzquierdo, 51, a physician who died after suffering critical injuries in a three-vehicle collision in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, on August 10, 2026.
According to Louisiana State Police, the fatal crash occurred shortly before noon on Louisiana Highway 93 near Rue Scholastique Road in Scott.
Investigators said Yzquierdo was driving a 2021 Chrysler Pacifica and was attempting to turn left from Rue Scholastique onto LA 93 when her vehicle entered the path of a southbound 2025 Kenworth tractor-trailer hauling a flatbed trailer.
The Kenworth struck the passenger side of the Chrysler, causing Yzquierdo’s vehicle to rotate in the roadway. The Chrysler was then struck again on its passenger side by a northbound 1993 Peterbilt pulling a trailer loaded with sand.
Yzquierdo sustained critical injuries in the collision and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, she later died from her injuries.
Her death has brought profound sadness to family members, friends, colleagues and others in the Baytown community who knew her.
At 51, Yzquierdo had built a life and career centered in part on caring for others as a physician. Her sudden death has therefore been particularly difficult for those who knew her personally as well as those who worked alongside her in the medical profession.
The other drivers involved in the collision also suffered different outcomes. Louisiana State Police said the Kenworth driver was not injured, while the driver of the Peterbilt sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a hospital.
Authorities said all three drivers were properly restrained at the time of the crash.
Investigators have also indicated that impairment is not suspected at this stage. The driver of the Kenworth voluntarily provided a breath sample, which showed no alcohol detected. A routine toxicology sample was collected from the Peterbilt driver and submitted for analysis.
The investigation remains ongoing. At this point, authorities have not indicated that criminal wrongdoing or impairment played a role in the collision.
For Yzquierdo’s family and friends, however, the investigation cannot ease the pain of losing someone so suddenly.
A fatal roadway crash can transform an ordinary day into an unimaginable tragedy within seconds. Loved ones are now left to process the circumstances of her death while remembering the person she was beyond the collision.
